Research Focus

Harvey Blanch is a senior faculty scientist at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and the Merck Professor of Biochemical Engineering in the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at the University of California, Berkeley.

Dr. Blanch’s research is at the interface of biology and engineering, with applications to biotechnology, pharmaceuticals production and biofuels. He is the author of the textbook “Biochemical Engineering” that introduces engineering students to biological processing.  He is a Fellow of AAAS and a Member of the National Academy of Engineering.

Projects

As Chief Science and Technology Officer, Dr. Blanch oversees the integration of the center’s cross-divisional scientific and technical projects into a coherent program. With more than 40 years experience in biochemical engineering, he ensures JBEI’s research and development activities align with industry needs and standards. He also oversees the techno-economic modeling project toassess the economic impact of JBEI’s research. Dr. Blanch also takes a lead in JBEI’s interactions with industry so as to:

  • Obtain a commercial perspective that informs science
  • Accelerate biofuels innovation through research support/collaboration
  • Create a climate for successful spin off companies
  • License new technologies to industry for commercialization
