Pamela Ronald, JBEI’s Director of Grass Genetics in the Feedstocks Division and a biologist faculty scientist in the Biosciences Area’s Environmental Genomics and Systems Biology Division (EGSB), has been awarded the 2022 Wolf Prize in Agriculture. The prestigious international science prizes are awarded annually to scientists whose work provides exceptional contributions to humanity.

Ronald, who is also a distinguished professor in the Department of Plant Pathology at the University of California, Davis (one of JBEI’s partner universities) was selected for the prize based on her “pioneering work on disease resistance and environmental stress tolerance in rice.”  The Wolf Foundation award announcement further lauded Pamela Ronald’s research facilitating “the development of flood-tolerant rice varieties now grown by more than 6 million subsistence farmers in India and Bangladesh, where 4 million tons of rice, enough to feed 30 million people, is lost each year to flooding.”

The prizes were announced Tuesday, February 8, 2022 via live webstream from Israel. For more information, please view the Wolf Foundation’s award announcement.
