Jay Keasling, CEO of the Joint BioEnergy Institute has won the 2013 George Washington Carver Award for innovation in industrial biotechnology, presented by the Biotechnology Industry Organization. A pioneer in synthetic biology, Keasling has engineered microbes to produce a frontline antimalarial drug and biofuel substitutes for gasoline, diesel and jet fuel.
