Reporting to the CEO, the COO is responsible for all JBEI facility operations and administrative management functions. The COO oversees and directs budget/financial planning and management, human resources, communications, education, facilities, environment, health & safety (EH&S), and JBEI administrative staff. The COO supports and acts on behalf of the JBEI CEO in day-to-day management and planning related to the JBEI infrastructure and business functions. As an active member of the JBEI senior management group, the COO participates in strategic planning, and formulation and direction of programs and projects to enhance the growth of JBEI as a national resource. The COO also provides assurance that operations are managed effectively and efficiently.
Nick Everson has nearly 20 years of financial and operations management experience, beginning as a submarine electrician in the United States Navy. He was a financial analyst in industry for Intel Corporation, and then in the National Lab environment at LLNL. He began work at LBNL as the Business Manager for the DOE Joint Genome Institute in 2007 and received his MBA from the UC Berkeley Haas School of Business while there. After JGI, Nick spent 2.5 years as the Deputy Director for Operations in the Materials Sciences Division at LBNL. Nick has been COO of JBEI since October 2014, and in October 2015 also took on the role of Deputy for Operations for the Biological Systems & Engineering Division.
