Reporting to the CEO, the COO is responsible for all JBEI facility operations and administrative management functions. The COO oversees and directs budget/financial planning and management, human resources, communications, education, facilities, environment, health & safety (EH&S), and JBEI administrative staff. The COO supports and acts on behalf of the JBEI CEO in day-to-day management and planning related to the JBEI infrastructure and business functions. As an active member of the JBEI senior management group, the COO participates in strategic planning, and formulation and direction of programs and projects to enhance the growth of JBEI as a national resource. The COO also provides assurance that operations are managed effectively and efficiently.

Diane Pierotti has over 30 years of research program development and management experience. She is a graduate of UC Berkeley where she also spent the majority of her career. At Berkeley, Diane conceptualized, developed and shepherded large-scale initiatives and programs through successful resource procurement, launches and implementation. Notable efforts launched include the National Center for the Workplace, QB3 Institute, the NSF Synthetic Biology Engineering Research Center (Synberc), and the Center for Computational and Genomic Biology. She also led Berkeley coordination efforts for the establishment of the Deep Underground Science and Engineering Laboratory, now the Stanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) and oversaw the development of the successful proposal to establish the Energy Biosciences Institute, a $500M award signifying the largest university/industry agreement in the nation’s history. Prior to leaving Berkeley, Diane conceived of, and launched, the Berkeley Research Development Office. Before arriving at JBEI, Diane spent three years as Director of Institutional Philanthropy at Planned Parenthood Northern California (PPNorCal), the fifth largest affiliate in the nation serving 20 counties and providing services to over 150,000 people. While at PPNorCal, she more than doubled the affiliate’s annual institutional philanthropy support.
