In leading this combined effort, the national laboratories are fulfilling their primary mission of conducting large-scale, "Apollo Mission"-like research projects that are beyond the scope of any single institution. These labs have a strong track record of initiating and successfully conducting complex, risky, and high-gain enterprises with industry. The national laboratories and universities bring together their complementary skill sets and facilities to take biofuels from the lab bench to the fuel tank.
